How We Review

1. Backup Automation (Weight: 30%)

The single biggest predictor of whether a NAS actually gets used. We test: initial onboarding time from box to first auto-backup, background sync reliability on home Wi-Fi, multi-device behavior (phone + tablet + laptop), and whether "delete after sync" and versioning options behave predictably. A device that needs manual file copies fails this category outright.

2. Local AI & Search (Weight: 25%)

We index a mixed library (photos, 4K clips, screenshots, documents) and measure: indexing speed per GB, accuracy of face/scene/text retrieval, offline functionality, and — critically — whether any processing leaves the local network. Cloud-dependent "AI" features score lower on principle.

3. True Cost of Ownership (Weight: 25%)

We model 5-year costs including hardware, drives, power draw (measured, not quoted), and any forced subscriptions or branded-drive premiums. Every review links to our public cost calculator so you can reproduce our math with your own numbers. A $50 cheaper device that locks you into proprietary drives is not cheaper.

4. Longevity & Expandability (Weight: 20%)

Drive-bay expansion, standard (non-proprietary) drive compatibility, software update cadence, and data portability: if the vendor disappeared tomorrow, could you still read your data? Vendors that trap your archive in proprietary formats are penalized heavily.
